earthship workshops - april 2015
workshops sat 11 april - tuesday 21 april 2015
We almost finished the ship last January. But there is still a bit more to do...
There is more internal and external rendering to be done: earth, lime, cement, tadelakt - lots to learn if you are interested in "finishes". There is also an earthship style bath (ferrocement with tadelakt finish), floors (flagstone) and there is always a few more tyres to pound somewhere, e.g. on the new outdoor stairs.
The workshops are structured to be flexible... you can come for a weekend (or two), a long weekend (or two), or two weeks. See dates and prices below.

what's happening when?
Here is a list of the building projects we will try to complete: tyre pounding, rendering (internal and external), mini planter construction, bottle brick making, bottle wall finishes, main floor (linseed oil finishing), greenhouse floor, bath construction with ferro cement, bushfire sprinkler installation.
What we actually get done and when will depend on factors such as the weather, how many people attend, how efficient we are and other logistics.
On the Saturdays, at the start of the workshops there will be a tour with full explanation of Earthship Ironbank and Earthship Biotecture principles. This will be repeated each week so that no one misses out. There will also be info sessions with Q&A specific to the tasks at hand. Feel free to bring movies or slide presentations that you want to share in the evenings - we have a data projector.

instructors - to be confirmed...
The workshop will be led by Martin Freney, with assistance from some of Australia's finest Earthship Builders, many of whom have studied with Michael Reynolds via the Earthship Biotecture Academy and Internships.
Sarah has worked with Habitat for Humanity, done the Earthship Biotecture Academy and has worked on many natural building projects. Her area of expertise is plumbing and laughing.
Sam Tregenza is a rising star in the Australian Earthship community. He has done the Earthship Biotecture Academy in Taos, interned with Earthship Biotecture in Montana and has been involved with many Earthship projects in Australia. He loves the purr of a mini bike or 8 tonne excavator.
Tommy D; Permie, Earthshipper, Renegade Gardener, RocknRoller.

Charles Swain... aquaponics guru, marketing genius, Earthship Ironbank veteran, and a gun on the hempcrete mixer. He's got a dog called Dave.
Clare Aston has been on an international Earthship building binge for the last 20 months, including the Earthship Biotecture Academy, and will be returning to Earthship Ironbank to share her skills.
Martin Freney is the designer/owner-builder of Earthship Ironbank. He teaches sustainable design at the University of South Australia and has just completed his PhD which investigated the environmental impacts of Earthships compared to other housing types. He has traveled to Taos twice, first in 2008 to do the Earthship Biotecture Internship and again in 2011 to install temperature/humidity logging devices in six Earthships and interview Earthship occupants as part of his PhD studies. Earthship Ironbank is credited as the first "sanctioned" (by Earthship Biotecture) and council approved Earthship in Australia. His business, Earthship Eco Homes, is a consultancy for Earthship design; assisting people with plans and advice to make their Earthship dreams become a reality.
